Happy January! It’s Glaucoma Awareness Month!
The National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute has designated January as Glaucoma Awareness Month, and we’re excited to help spread the word about what you can do to keep your eyes healthy and free of the most common cause of blindness among Americans.
According to the NIH, “People are often unaware that glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages. If detected early, before noticeable vision loss occurs, glaucoma can usually be controlled and severe vision loss can often be prevented. Vision that is lost from glaucoma cannot be restored. Anyone can get glaucoma, but those at higher risk include:
- African Americans over age 40
- Everyone over age 60, especially Hispanics/Latinos
- People with a family history of the disease”
If you believe you may be at risk for glaucoma, don’t wait — get an eye exam today! If you’re a Georgia resident without insurance or access to Medicare or Medicaid, you may qualify for a free or very low-cost eye exam via the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation. To find out if you qualify, click here to visit our vision services page and click ‘Apply’ to start the application process.
